Common Use
Serc (Betahistine dihydrochloride) is primarily used to treat Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo (a spinning sensation), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear. Betahistine acts as a histamine analog, improving blood microcirculation in the inner ear, which helps to reduce the pressure of excess fluid and restore balance.
Dosage and Direction
The standard adult dose is 16 mg taken two to three times daily, preferably with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. The dosage may be adjusted based on the severity of symptoms and the patient's response to treatment. Consistency is important for maximum effectiveness; it may take a few weeks to notice significant improvement.
Precautions
Before using Serc, inform your doctor if you have:
-
Asthma (due to potential bronchospasm),
-
Peptic ulcer or a history of stomach ulcers (as betahistine may increase gastric acid secretion),
-
Hypotension (low blood pressure),
-
Pregnancy or breastfeeding — safety is not fully established.
Caution is also advised in elderly patients or those with impaired liver/kidney function.
Contraindications
-
Known hypersensitivity to betahistine or any of the tablet’s components.
-
Pheochromocytoma (a rare adrenal gland tumor), as betahistine may induce a hypertensive crisis.
It should not be used without medical supervision in children or adolescents due to lack of data on safety and efficacy.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
-
Mild gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, dyspepsia, bloating.
-
Headache or dizziness during the initial phase of treatment.
-
Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, or hives (rare).
Most side effects are mild and transient, and improve as the body adjusts to the medication.
Drug Interaction
-
Betahistine may interact with antihistamines (e.g., cetirizine, loratadine), potentially reducing the effectiveness of either drug.
-
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including some antidepressants, may increase betahistine levels and effects — caution is advised.
-
No significant interaction with alcohol or common antibiotics, but it's best to consult a physician before combining medications.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember.
If it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose — do not take a double dose to make up for it.
Overdose
Although rare, symptoms of overdose may include:
-
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, or seizures in extreme cases.
In the event of suspected overdose, seek immediate medical assistance or contact a poison control center.
Storage
-
Store the medication at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F).
-
Keep away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
-
Store in the original blister packaging, out of reach of children and pets.
-
Do not use after the expiration date printed on the box.
